Australia has the benefits of both a world-class health system and a fantastic lifestyle to offer you.
Career Benefits
Clinical experience accredited to your specialist training goals - You will gain clinical experience that is comparable or better than any advanced, Western country. Many IMG’s return home to find that the clinical experience they gained in Australia can be credited towards their specialist training programme in their country of origin.
Clinical presentations - With a country as large and diverse in geography and population demographics as Australia, you can be exposed to a variety of clinical presentations and patient demographics such as: Indigenous Health; Tropical Diseases; Rural Health; community specific health trends/issues.
Specialist training available - After working in Australia for year, you may then be given the option to apply to an Australian specialist college and enter into a specialist training programme.
More “hands-on experience” - We understand that in comparison to many Western countries, Australian and New Zealand hospitals tend to give their junior doctors more (than is typical in the UK, Europe or the U.S) hands on experience across a variety of clinical scenarios, than they would receive in their country of origin.
No “4-hour rule” - For UK Doctors: no “4-hour rule” in Australian and New Zealan emergency departments! You are given the time and resources to correctly diagnose and refer/treat your patients in the “best practice” manner that we know all doctors prefer.
Temporary and permanent work available – Most hospitals in Australia and New Zealand are prepared to offer 6 or 12-month employment contracts, which of course gives you some flexibility in how long you have to commit to working for on your initial contract. Should you wish to move to Australia or New Zealand for longer than 12-months, we will be able to prioritise our search for positions that will be more permanent in nature. You will find that the initial contract issued is likely to be for 12-months, however if you indicate your interest to remain permanently, this can be offered by the hospital and the role will be yours on an on-going basis
Lifestyle Benefits
Sand, surf or snow…..yes it’s true. There are locations in Australia and New Zealand where you can live by the beach and be within 3-hours drive of the ski fields. Or you can live in the tropics and be a 2-hour flight from the snow, or vice versa.
Work-life balance - Many IMG’s comment to us that they find the work-life balance available to doctors here, to be far better than their home country. Many hospitals are very flexible with regards how rosters are put together. As an example it is common to be able to organise working for a high number of consecutive shifts and as a result have a week or two off, to travel or indulge your whims(surfing, skiing, swimming, diving, 4-wheel driving…..etc) as part of your normal roster.
Easy Commute - In nearly every instance you will find that you will have access to affordable and suitable accommodation, within an easy (5 to 20 mins drive or walk) commute from home to work.
Highly respected member of the community - Doctors are highly respected members of the community in Australia and New Zealad in general. In more rural or remote settings, you will find that you are genuinely welcomed with open arms by the community, as you will make a material difference to their lives by committing to work in their local hospital for typically 6 to 12-months.
Lower cost of living - The lower cost of living (in comparison to most Western countries) in Australia and New Zealand, gives you more spending power than you are likely to have in the UK, Europe, U.S or Canada.
